WHAT ARE THE NEW CHALENGES FOR OPERATORS?

Today approximately 60% of communications using mobile networks are performed indoors. The operators are more and more in face of several hard challenges:

–          Provide efficient indoor coverage

–          Assure a growing baseband traffic demand

In term of cost, increasing the number of macro cells for indoor coverage is expensive. In practice providing indoor coverage can be also a difficult task especially due to the propagation path loss of the outer of the wall as well the constraints due to the field strength exposure regulation close to the life areas (limitation of the transmitted power, site location restrictions…)… The 3GPP Release 9 (TR 25.967), has introduced a new concept of base station called Home NodeB (HNB) or FEMTOCELL to improve indoor coverage (UTRAN and E-UTRAN access networks) with lower equipment cost and deployment complexity compare to the traditional macro and micro stations. The FEMTOCELL  is a lower power base station communicating in a licensed spectrum, offering improved indoor coverage with increased performance. Hence as a user enters his or her home, the cellular phone will recognize the presence of the FEMTOCELL and then register to it. This will alert the macro base station that any further communication to this user will be via the home ISP network.

FEMTOCELL MODELIZATION IN ICS DESIGNER:
