What browsers are compatible with ICS online?

ICS online is compatible with the following browsers:

Chrome: v.27+
Firefox: v.13+
IE: v.9+

Can I use the format .rge and .rso in ICS telecom?

ICS telecom and HTZ warfare use both these formats. The .rge represents the geo layer and .rso represents the .sol layers. For full details of how to use these compressed formats view the latest masterclass recording on our YouTube channel: Click here

How to create a subscriber database?

This tutorial demonstrates how to set up a subscriber database in ICS telecom.

Using RGE and RSO file extensions instead of GEO and SOL

ATDI offers high resolution terrain elevation and clutter maps for countries in Europe and around the World.

These maps use geodetic projection ETRS89 (same as EPSG3035). The terrain and clutter layer files have root extensions RGE and RSO.

ICS telecom uses this file format, along with more familiar formats like GEO and SOL.

To create a project with the latest map data (ETRS89 maps), the RGE file should be used in place of GEO and the RSO instead of SOL. For the image layer, ATDI recommends Bing maps. Users should ensure that the resolution for all the layers is either ‘equal’ or ‘multiple’.

I’m having problems connecting to the Network dongle?

If you are using the network dongle key you may experience problems because a firewall could be blocking communications, particularly on the clients’ computer. The key requires the port 6001 is open for UDP datagrams on both the client and server side. This can be done using a group policy at the active directory level or it can be done using exceptions on the client side. In Windows 7, go to the firewall via the control panel and select the program using the key under exceptions. This will need to be done for each client program that accesses the key.

The network dongle operates by finding the dongle server using broadcasts. On some networks, broadcasts may be blocked due to operations in a different segment, a bridging device or a policy blocking broadcasts. To get round this problem insert the NSP_HOST=<servername/ip address> e.g. into the environment variables (Control Panel > System > Advanced). This will most likely need to be completed over the VPN. In order to monitor licences, there is a useful diagnostic web page accessible here: http://<servername/ip address>:6002.

Why does Propagation Model ITU-R P.368-9 not work?

This propagation model requires a ground conductivity layer to be loaded into the clutter layer.

The ground conductivity layer (8 bit IC1 type file) is derived from ITU-R P.832-2 with an associated conductivity index file. The conductivity values are loaded using “Load Conductivity file…” > now update the Permittivity needs – “Update the permittivity’s from the conductivities”. See associated image.

The model is now ready to use.

What are the differences between the various sub-path models?

The subpath attenuation is only applied when the Fresnel zone has been intruded by ground / clutter but the direct path is still clear.

The standard is exactly as theory would have it applied.

Coarse can be used for VHF and UHF with DTM of greater than 50mr (fastest).

Fine should be applied when the earth bulge starts intruding into Fresnel zone (slow).

Free ellipsoid used along with visibility / indoor settings in diffraction geometry can be used to determine where service is possible from a given transmitter.

What licensing restrictions are imposed on Ordnance Survey Open data

The OS OpenData licence allows you to:

  • copy, distribute and transmit the data
  • adapt the data
  • exploit the data commercially, whether by sub-licensing it, combining it with      other data, or including it in your own product or application.

You are therefore able to use the OS OpenData datasets in any way and for any purpose.

We simply ask that you:

  • Acknowledge the copyright and the source of the data by including the following attribution statement: ‘Contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2013’.
  • Include the same acknowledgement requirement in any sub-licences of the data that you grant, and a requirement that any further sub-licences do the same.
  • Ensure that you do not use the data in a way that suggests Ordnance Survey      endorses you or your use of the data.
  • Ensure that you do not misrepresent the data or its source.

We now incorporate the new Open Government Licence into our OS OpenData Licence.

The Open Government Licence, developed by The National Archives, is designed to provide a single set of terms and conditions for anyone wishing to use freely available government information. Importantly, this does not alter what users of OS OpenData can do. All the data available through OS OpenData is still open for commercial or non-commercial use without restriction. More information on the change, and why we have made it.

I have changed my computer. Will the original activation code for IMP Calc work on my new computer?

The activation code is specific to the original machine IMP Calc was installed on. However, the software licence is transferable but users are advised to follow the process outlined in the ’Getting Started Guide’. If the transfer is unsuccessful, a new activation code will be supplied. Please contact ATDI providing reason for the request.

Are Bing maps subject to copyright?

Under the Attribution requirements of the Microsoft terms and conditions of use, users are requested to insert the following caption under images when printing: Microsoft product screen shot(s) reprinted with permission from Microsoft Corporation

Security protocols for ICS online

ICS online is hosted through Microsoft Azure website. For full details of the security protocols for this please visit: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/support/trust-center/security/

How many frequencies can IMP Calc handle?

There is a limit of 32,000 frequencies, but the user should note that computation times increase significantly as the number of inputs rise. IMPCalc can also only display the first 32,000 results from these calculations, a figure which is affected by the filtering options on the Intermods tab (untick show all intermod, add frequency limits etc.).

While there is a temptation to add as many frequencies  as possible for a site, users are recommended to restrict the number of frequencies to the minimum required for a valid site configuration as this will help to generate more useful results. For example, if a transceiver can operate on two adjacent channels then these could be added to the list and intermodulation products between these channels would be computed. However, it is unlikely that both channels will operate simultaneously, which would result in more products being computed than necessary.

IMPCalc is requesting an activation code having previously worked

Providing your copy of IMP Calc is not an evaluation copy the most likely cause are changes to user profiles or upgrades to hardware. These will cause the activation code to fail and a new code should be requested from ATDI.

What are Bing maps?

Bing maps (previously Live search maps) are a web-based mapping service provided as part of Microsoft’s Bing suite of search engines.

How many Bing licences do I need?

Only one licence is needed per organisation. Bing keys can be shared across an organisation. The only limitation is made directly by Microsoft and relates directly to the maximum number of requests that can be made within a given period using the same key.

How often are Bing maps updated?

Bing maps frequently update and expand the geographic areas covered by their imagery, with new updates being released on roughly a monthly basis. Each imagery release typically contains more than 10TB of imagery.

However, the necessary time-lapse before images are updated means that aerial and Bird’s-Eye images for a particular location can sometimes be several years out-of-date. This is particularly noticeable in locations that have undergone rapid recent development or experienced other dramatic changes since the imagery was taken, such as areas affected by natural disasters.

Users should be aware that HTZ telecom edition defaults to cached maps. Users should delete cached maps regularly to utilise the latest versions of Bing maps.

How to use Bing maps while retaining existing map data set?

One method would be to load the project with a ‘normal’ map layer. Once the project has been uploaded right click on the map and select the ‘change map’ option. Follow the prompts to select the new map layer and pal.

For the Bing map layer the user will need to select the file STD.PAL for the palette file. Once complete, switch between map layers by right clicking on the screen, select change maps and then select the layer which you want to switch to.

How to use dBm as a reference unit in ICS telecom EV?

In earlier versions you could swap between units in the preferences menu. However, the latest version of HTZ telecom edition this is only available in the Threshold-window (which is grayed out).

In order to work in dBm rather than dBuV/m for TX/RX FS coverage follow these instructions:

  1. Enter the settings button
  2. 4th down on the left hand side and select threshold, top option. This will offer the menu
  3. If you select threshold from Rx, you will then have available the option to work in dBm.
  4. You will need to set in each TX/RX advanced tab the minimum working threshold.

The antenna patterns are not loading when I import stations from the Access database?

The antennas that need to be associated with the database must be stored in the ****HTZBase directory as *.SPH and *.SPV.

The total length of the file name including the .SPH or .SPV should be limited to 10 characters as defined in the ICS telecom EV database structure.

How can I extract coverage statistics based upon vector polygons and specific clutter options?

ICS telecom EV has the ability to report coverage statistics based upon a vector polygon area and a clutter file. The attached pdf provides a detailed explanation : Statistics Via The Vector Polygons (168.4 kB)
